Prue Kapua (Ngāti Whakaue, Ngāti Kahungunu) has been National President of Māori Womens Welfare League since 2014. She is a lawyer and principal of Tamatekapua Law. Māori Women’s Welfare League (MWWL) was established in 1951 with Te Puea Herangi as the first Patron and Dame Whina Cooper as the first President. Currently there are approximately 175 branches throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand and one overseas branch. MWWL has a membership of approximately 3000. MWWL is the oldest national Māori organisation still in existence and is the only national Māori women’s organisation.
