A treat for a chilly autumn evening.

Lusciously smooth and velvety, bittersweet and spiked with orange, this is the perfect drink to sip while curled in your favourite chair by the fire. I’m a fan of dark chocolate so I haven’t added any sugar to this recipe. If you have a sweeter tooth then add sugar or even honey to taste.

ORANGE HOT CHOCOLATE

Serves 2-4

  • 250ml full cream milk
  • 75g dark chocolate (I used Whittaker’s 72%)
  • 1 orange
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste

Pour the milk into a heavy-bottomed pot, break the chocolate into pieces into the milk and add the vanilla.

Using a vegetable peeler, peel strips of zest from the orange – you should get about five. Add these to the pot and heat, whisking as you go until it just begins to simmer and is smooth and thick.

Remove from the heat and pour into mugs before garnishing with shaved chocolate, if desired, and serving.  I used my coffee plunger to froth mine up a bit. Not necessary but makes it seem a little more decadent!

Keep going!
