Inside the Lightbox is a sponsored feature where we look for shows you might like to watch from their catalogue. This week, we figure out how you can fill the void before the next season of Vikings with help from the show’s newest star.
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s that guy from Bend It Like Beckham who seems like he is always wearing a really nice lipgloss. Vikings creator Michael Hirst has confirmed that Jonathan Rhys Meyers will be joining season five in the role of Heahmund, a Wessex man with a wilder streak than Floki’s eye makeup on a wet day. Alas, the new season starring JRM won’t be here until the end of the year. Wah! Here are some things you can do to tide yourself over until the new season of Vikings, some special guest tips courtesy of newly-announced star Jonathan Rhys Meyers himself.
Grow your hair long
With Vikings touted to be back towards the end of the year, why not pass the time by sitting still and growing your hair really, really long like Jonathan Rhys Meyers did one time. Shave the undersides, whack in a plait and you’ve got yourself the perfect Viking-era hairdo right in time for season five.
Dive into The Tudors instead
Old mate JRM was nominated for a Golden Globe for The Tudors, which is also available on Lightbox so you don’t even need to worry about opening a new tab. People in Tudor times didn’t know about tabs, but they did know about intrigue, affairs, sumptuous platters and opulent fur coats. So, there’s that.
…. or perhaps some Outrageous Fortune?
As Moata Tamaira has pointed out, Vikings are basically the bogans of the sea. Plus, if you pace yourself, there’s enough Outrageous Fortune to get you through the winter.
Clean your house like JRM on a Sunday morning
Nothing screams Shredding for Vikings like a Roomba and some spray and wipe. Once everything is spotless, then and only then can you relax with a packet of Rolos.
Build a boat and get over it
With time stretching before you like Ragnar’s rat tail, maybe it’s finally time to build a Vikings boat. How long can it take to build a beautiful longship? A week? As the old saying goes, if there’s a Youtube tutorial about it, you can probably, definitely do it yourself.
Listen to 10,000 tracks from all over the world
Yes this photo is grainy. Yes this quote is unverified. But 10,000 songs would definitely knock some time off the clock.
Rewatch season four without stopping or moving
Make like our staff producer Jose, who spent 10 hours watching Vikings whilst slowly morphing into one himself. Get some broth on the boil and pour yourself a big mug of mead for the 4D Vikings experience.
… there’s always Bend it Like Beckham
Perhaps his most memorable role as Coach Joe, Jonathan Rhys Meyers will probably pull on his iconic Beckham character in Vikings more often than you might expect. At the very least, we know that he will be well-prepared for running across a field at a great pace. Plus it’s just a bloody great film and deserves your undivided attention.
