Now You Know, season two, episode 74

Robbie Nicol explains why the New Zealand government just auctioned off $225m worth of online casino gambling licences.

Starting December 1, only 11 companies will be allowed to operate online casino gambling services in Aotearoa. Previously, there was no limitation on the number of online casino gambling services that were available in New Zealand, however it was illegal for any such service to operate from New Zealand shores. TAB and Lotto were licensed to offer online gambling, but not casino-style gambling games.

The 11 companies that successfully won the auction for 15 online casino gambling licences include both New Zealand-based and foreign companies. They have all agreed to pay the New Zealand government $15m per licence. The licences will last for three years.

Once the licences are approved (or by June 1, 2027, whichever comes first), the 11 companies will also be allowed to advertise their services. The advertising of online casino gambling was previously illegal under the Gambling Act 2003.
