In case you missed it, last night John Campbell got the biggest treat of his life. It had just been a regular episode like any other, until there was an abrupt change in John’s silky schedule.
Suddenly, Ali Ikram beams live from the Kings Arms. I mean beaming in both senses of the words, you can tell that something baller as heck is about to happen to our John. He’s bewildered, but jovial. Always delighted to see his moustachio’d friend. Maybe this will just be an insightful Skype chat, who knows?
Ali reveals that John has been a little glum recently. One of John’s favourite musical artists, Sharon Van Etten, has come to play in Auckland, but he has a clash with a corporate function that same evening. The camera pans left and we see Sharon Van Etten standing there, and we know because John delightedly exclaims:
And then John Campbell started to weep:
And weep:
And weep some more:
“This is pathetic,” he says “I’m 51 years old, but sometimes music just keeps you afloat.” John was completely taken aback, revealing that he had wanted to do a story about her as his secret musical passion, but it didn’t fly with the producers.
As she starts to play, John shares her background and tour details with the audience. Ever the consummate professional, such a superhuman but also just so damn human.
“This has been a magic treat.” It sure has John.
