What are you going to be watching this week? We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.
The biggies
True Detective: Night Country (on Neon from January 15)
Jodie Foster? On TV? In the year 2024? Sure, why not! The fourth season of True Detective looks to be a return to form for the once critically acclaimed show. This season moves the action to the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska and follows Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (boxer-actor Kali Reis) as they investigate the disappearance of eight men from a research station. / Sam Brooks
Death and Other Details (on Disney+ from January 16)
If you’re missing Only Murders in the Building, or need an Agatha Christie fix, then you’re in luck this month. This whodunnit stars Mandy Patinkin as “the world’s greatest detective” Rufus Cotesworth, who finds himself on a cruise ship where his old nemesis, Imogene Scott (Violett Beane) becomes the prime suspect in a locked-room murder mystery. Together they work to prove her innocence and find the real culprit. / SB
Dance Life (on Prime Video from January 19)
This five part docuseries follows a select group of students as they go through their final year at Australia’s elite dance studio, Brent Street. They bring with them a lifetime of dance experience, and an equal amount of ambition as they work towards their end of year grad performance. Docuseries or horror series? You decide! / SB
The notables
Belgravia: The Next Chapter (on Neon from January 16)
If there’s one thing Julian Fellows (Downton Abbey, The Gilded Age) knows how to do it is document the perils of the historical rich. The original series followed the trajectory of a family secret from a party in Belgium on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo (that’s way back in 1815, if you need it) to England’s Belgravia neighbourhood in the 1840s. This second series is set 30 years later, and follows the family as that secret explodes. / SB
Nobodies (on ThreeNow from January 18)
This is a sweet one! Three members of the famous improv troupe Groundlings (Hugh Davidson, Larry Dorf and Rachel Ramras, playing loosely fictionalised versions of themselves) struggle to make a break in Hollywood while all their friends achieve fame and fortune. This one is from a few years ago, but if you enjoyed the parody series The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window from 2022, it’s by the same trio so you’ll probably enjoy this! / SB
Jane the Virgin (every episode ever on TVNZ+ from January 18)
If there’s one show that 100% did not get its due when it was actually on the air, it is Jane the Virgin. Despite the slightly cringe, if honest, title, this show managed to perfectly balance being a parody of a telenovela while also being an extremely earnest, intelligent and funny show about race, class, wealth and family. Yes, it is also about a virgin (played by Gina Rodriguez) who in spite of this fact suddenly finds herself pregnant. / SB
The films
Love Again (on Neon from January 23)
This one sounds completely bonkers. Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Sam Heughan star in this romantic comedy revolving around text messages. It is a remake of a 2016 German film SMS fur Dich, which is itself an adaptation of a novel by Sofie Cramer. But wait for it: Celine Dion stars as a fictionalised version of herself, somehow. Consider me seated! / SB
Moneyball (on Neon from January 21)
Put simply: Moneyball is one of the best sports films of all time. It is absolutely the best film about gaming the American baseball draft system. If that sounds dull to you, I urge you to check the film out. It’s somehow, bizarrely, a crowdpleaser. / SB
Killers of the Flower Moon (on AppleTV+ now)
This one is a little bit of a cheat, given it actually dropped on streaming last week, but you now have the chance to watch one of the best films of 2023, right in your home, so why wouldn’t you? This new Scorsese stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone (currently, correctly, sweeping Best Actress prizes across awards season), and focuses on a series of murders of people in the Osage Nation in 1930s Oklahoma, after oil was discovered on their tribal land. It is a stunning, sickening tale of crime, greed and murder – and absolutely necessary watching. / SB
