Fragmentary Thoughts: Better Call Saul

saul

Fragmentary Thoughts is a new comic strip by José Barbosa, in which he’ll tackle a different television show or phenomenon each month. The first is a response to the debut episode of Better Call Saul. Warning: contains a spoiler. //

Straight out of the starting blocks Better Call Saul‘s first episode didn’t quite knock it out of the park like its precursor did. In Breaking Bad‘s premiere Walt appears in the desert wearing only his gruts, but he’s pointing a gun at the sound of police sirens in the distance.

This remains one the best series openers since Lost. What the new show did have was the confidence to pull the audience into a familiar tale of events tumbling out of control by starting off slow and dialogue free. Things bode very well, particularly if the showrunners can avoid the temptation to jam in cameos and nods from Breaking Bad characters àla the already crowded Batman prequel Gotham. In the mean time some random observations follow. Spoilers ahead!
