A rare opportunity to join our team of award-winning journalists.
The Spinoff is advertising for a staff writer for the first time in… maybe ever? This is an extremely rare opportunity to join our small team of award-winning writers, covering a range of topics and tones, from the most serious to the most ridiculous. As a local media outlet with a focus on delivering world-class feature writing, The Spinoff is the place to be for anyone looking to dive deep on New Zealand topics.
The ideal candidate will be a strong writer with a confident point of view, and someone who is always learning and curious. A sense of humour is particularly helpful. We’re especially keen to hear from writers interested in politics, business and social issues.
This is a full-time (40 hours per week) role. It will include frequent conversation with our senior editors, so an enthusiasm for collaboration is a key element.
The Spinoff offices are in Morningside, Auckland, but we would consider a remote working arrangement for the right candidate.
Responsibilities include:
- Producing a minimum of three high-quality written pieces per week (formats include features, columns, explainers, news stories, reviews, partner content)
- Responding to story assignments set by The Spinoff editors, producing written pieces as briefed, as part of weekly deliverables
- Contribute additional story ideas that may be written by others in the editorial team.
Skills and experience
Candidates should have a minimum of two years’ experience in media. This could be a position for an emerging writer ready to take the next step in their career or an intermediate writer looking for new challenges.
Next steps
Please submit your application via SEEK. All applications require a CV, a cover letter to be addressed to The Spinoff editor, Madeleine Chapman, and a writing sample that you believe would be at home on The Spinoff.
Applications are due by May 20, 2024, but may close earlier if a suitable applicant is found.
