Five kids, five family businesses, and a whole lot of responsibility.
The Spinoff’s 2022 docu-series Takeout Kids is returning for season two, looking into the lives of five more young people growing up between the classroom, home and their family shop. From a Thai restaurant in the Banks Peninsula to a nail salon in Whakatāne, juggling the complexities of identity, relationships and responsibilities is a challenge faced not only by these young people, but thousands more across Aotearoa.
Our first episode features Priyan, who we meet in his first week of school, playing pretend with toys resembling the real-life superette run by his family in Auckland. Then we meet Taupō’s Dom, who serves customers in his mother’s Thai restaurant and contends with a strained relationship with his father. Next is high-schooler Lauren, who is trying to decide whether her career in the family business should be traded for a move into the tourism industry.
The fourth episode focuses on Phitcha, a teen in Akaroa whose family’s Thai restaurant exposes the chasm between her and her father. Our final kid is Kyla in Whakatāne, who practises her pepeha for customers of her mum’s nail salon.
Takeout Kids is made with the support of NZ On Air. Episode one premieres on The Spinoff on Tuesday August 20.
