✏️ As well as serving dishes to customers in his mother’s Thai restaurant in Taupō, Dom has a lot on his own plate: he needs to perfect his golfing stance, practise basketball, and contend with a strained relationship with his father.

🎞 Takeout Kids is an observational documentary series from director Julie Zhu, following the everyday lives of five young people in Aotearoa growing up in their parents’ shops.

Dom plays basketball on the concrete outside his mum’s Thai restaurant. Keeping up with school, sport and work sometimes feel out of control, but there is one choice Dom has in his own hands: seeing, or not seeing, his father.

Kyla and her sister, Kylee, trade makeup tips in front of the mirror, using their mum’s cosmetics. In the nail salon where her mum works, Kyla shares her pepeha with customers after a long day of chatting about crushes in the playground.
