American Hostage (Neon, September 21)
American Hostage, an adaptation of the hit podcast of the same name, tells the true story of Fred Heckman (Jon Hamm). The suave Indianapolis radio reporter is thrust into a life-or-death situation when the desperate Tony Kiritsis (Giovanni Ribisi) takes a bank employee hostage and demands to be interviewed live on air. Described as a “thoughtful true-crime thriller,” this indictment of the intersection of crime and journalism is a white-knuckle watch.
Youth (HBO Max, September 21)
Created by and starring Sharon Horgan, the “queen of messy black comedies,” the post-divorce comedy TV show Youth “probes the perils of ageing and the horror of being single again.” Horgan is the strung-out Alex, a 50-year-old divorcee searching for sex and love while caring for her ailing parents and parenting her should-be-grown-up son. Also starring Homeland’s Rupert Friend and Aran Murphy (son of Cillian Murphy) Youth is sure to leave you in stitches.
Line of Fire (TVNZ+, September 23)
Loosely based on the experiences of executive producer Jenna Bush Hager, the daughter of former US President George W. Bush, this taut TV show follows The Hollingsworths, a family of law enforcement agents. Working within the FBI, the US marshals, the secret service and the department of Justice, the family soon becomes embroiled in a deadly conspiracy after a marshal falls in the line of duty. Billed as a cross between Scandal and Six Feet Under, the thrilling Line of Fire will keep you glued to your sofa.
Unabomber (Netflix, September 25)
Few in American history are as infamous as Ted Kaczynski, aka the Unabomber, the domestic terrorist who terrorised the country for nearly 20 years. Alternating between two timelines, this gripping true-crime drama stars Wonder’s Jacob Tremblay as Kaczynski and traces both his time at Harvard University and his prolonged manhunt decades later. Also featuring Russell Crowe as controversial Harvard psychologist Professor Henry Murray and Shailene Woodley as FBI agent Joanne Miller, Unabomber is one hell of a hair-raiser.
Brothers (Apple TV, September 23)
In the heartfelt Brothers, True Detective co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play fictionalised versions of themselves. Harrelson is on a family getaway at McConaughey’s ranch in Austin when a shocking decades-old secret is let slip: the best-friends and Hollywood A-Listers might actually be brothers. It won’t take long for these two to get into character for this “wildly funny story about friendship, family, fame and the messy line between myth and reality.”
Pick of the Flicks: Kim Novak’s Vertigo (Neon, September 22)
From documentarian Alexandre O. Philippe comes this “vanishingly rare first-hand window into the joys, terrors and vagaries of Hollywood’s golden age.” The intensely personal documentary candidly chronicles the life and career of the mythic Novak, the 92-year-old Hollywood star best known for her turn as Madeleine Elster in Hitchcock’s Vertigo. The dizzying masterpiece premiered in 1958 but, less than a decade later, the fiercely independent Novak had all but left Tinseltown to live life on her own terms. Labelled as a “very watchable and pleasurable film,” Kim Novak’s Vertigo is tailor-made for the cinema-mad.
