We’ve almost made it, folks. We’re almost at the end of 2021.

Back in January, this year seemed filled with such promise. We’d just survived a Covid summer unscathed and felt smug in our hermit kingdom, in striking contrast to the scenes pouring in from around the world. Life seemed pretty good in New Zealand. We all know what happened next.

But 2021 wasn’t just lockdowns and delta. As live updates editor, I’ve covered as much of this year’s news as possible and while Covid undoubtedly dominated the coverage, a lot of other shit happened. So, in joyous celebration of the fact we’ve made it to the end of this cesspit of a year, it’s time to look back at some highlights and lowlights. Because we all lived through it – but how well do you remember it?
