Scout is our latest Dog of the Month. This feature was offered as a reward during our What’s Eating Aotearoa PledgeMe campaign. Thank you to Scout’s human, Avril, for her support.

Dog name: Scout (named after the little girl in To Kill a Mockingbird – she inherited the independent spirit from her namesake.)

Age: 3

Breed: Schnauzer cross

If dog of the month had not been a reward in our PledgeMe campaign, give us the pitch on why Scout would be dog of the month anyway

Scout loves her humans but is the most independent dog I’ve ever encountered. She’s honestly more like a cat. I’m not sure she’s actually not a cat who just really loves chasing sticks. She has a vendetta against the neighbour’s cat, maybe she’s just afraid of being found out. If you ever decide you want to work from home she will come up to the office door, glare at you, and then if you dare to speak to her, she will stalk off. I think that’s great – if she chooses to be around you, you just feel all that more special.

What is Scout’s idea of happiness? (stolen from Proust questionnaire)

To be left for a life of solitude at least eight hours a day, to have a couch to rest on. A heat pump for the cold winter nights and a paddle (never a swim) at the beach for the long summer days. A decent 8-10km run with dad and her run club friends.

If Scout could talk, what famous voice would she sound like?

Anna Wintour – doesn’t give a lot away, but you’re pretty sure you’re being judged.

Would you say Scout was charisma or glamour? (stolen from Dichotomies)

Glamorous.

Thunder or lightning? (also stolen from Dichotomies)

Thunder.

What is Scout’s best quality?

Independence.

What is Scout’s worst quality?

She dislikes children. And men in fluoro (sorry tradies).

What food would Scout want to see ranked by The Spinoff?

McDonald’s burgers.

Does Scout have a job?

Is barking at couriers a job?

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our What’s Eating Aotearoa PledgeMe campaign. What’s Eating Aotearoa is a reader-funded editorial project from The Spinoff focused on food and how it shapes this country.

Keep going!
