What are you going to be watching in November? We round up everything coming to streaming services this month, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple TV+, Neon and TVNZ+.

The biggies

The Crown (season five on Netflix from November 9)

When the last season of The Crown ended, we had a Queen. When this fifth season of The Crown starts, we’ll have a King. Even though the bulk of this season was clearly conceived, written and shot assuming (or hoping) QEII would still be alive when it aired, that’s absolutely not the case now. That means this season carries some extra weight, along with a complete new cast. Imelda Staunton takes on the crown itself as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce takes on Prince Philip, while Lesley Manville, Elizabeth Debecki and Dominic West take on Princess Margaret, Princess Diana, and Prince Charles respectively. I’m pumped, what can I say? / Sam Brooks

The English (on Amazon Prime Video from November 11)

A Western revenge thriller starring Emily Blunt as an Englishwoman intent on killing the man who killed her son? Sign me the hell up. The new series from Hugo Blick, the creator of The Honourable Woman, a seriously underrated mini-series in its own right, sees Blunt’s character teaming up with a member of the Pawnee Nation, played by Chaske Spencer, to get her own. Just the sight of Emily Blunt, one of our most underrated talents, is enough to get me invested. / SB

Blockbuster (on Netflix from November 3)

Is there something cruel about Netflix making a workplace comedy about one of the most notorious brands it put out of business? Absolutely. Is it also kind of perfectly ironic and fitting that it is doing so on the eve of its decline, just as its bringing in an ad-tier platform? Absolutely, fabulous. Randall Park (Fresh Off The Boat) stars as the manager of the last operating Blockbuster Video Store, while Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) stars as his long-term crush. This feels like it has the potential to become a Happy Endings/Schitt’s Creek kind of sleeper hit, so definitely check on this one when it debuts. / SB

Dead to Me (season three on Netflix from November 18)

This Netflix comedy could probably have been a one-season miniseries. But that would have meant a lot less Christina Applegate, Linda Cardellini, and silly, campy fun. What started off as a black comedy about a hit-and-run ended up being more about themes like grief, forgiveness, and the importance of friendship. And while it may have been more than two years since the last batch of episodes – and I’ve therefore forgotten almost everything that happened – I’m dying to reunite with these characters for one final run. / Stewart Sowman-Lund

The notables

Mythic Quest (season three on Apple TV+ from November 11)

If you’ve been sleeping on Mythic Quest, that’s understandable. It’s a comedy on a network that is mostly known for prestige drama, prestige comedy, and however you want to categorise Severance. But if you are, you’re sleeping on one of the funniest, bleakest, and most prescient comedies out there at the moment. From It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-creators Rob McElehenney and Charlie Day, with Community writer Megan Ganz, it follows a fictional video game studio producing a popular MMORPG called Mythic Quest (think World of Warcraft) and the various interpersonal dramas that inevitably come up. It’s not breezy stuff, but it’s super intelligent and funny, and more than worth your time. / SB

Boss Babes (season two on TVNZ+ from November 9)

For fans of The Kardashians, The Apprentice NZ and seeing cast members of Celebrity Treasure Island in their natural habitats, I highly recommend local reality series BossBabes. The last season ended with e-commerce entrepreneurs and old friends Iyia Liu and Edna Swart coping with the very beginning of the pandemic way back in 2020. Two years on, who knows what is in store? Will baby Summer have launched her own haircare line? Will intern Bree now be an employee? And will Edna’s lids have finally shipped over from China. I genuinely can’t wait to find out, even if it remains the least relatable thing I’ve ever seen. / Alex Casey

Yellowstone (season five on Neon from November 14)

Yellowstone is a mega-hit overseas, but the American drama has somehow flown under the radar here in New Zealand, even though we bloody love farms. Kevin Costner (or “Hot Daddy” as one IMDB reviewer calls him) stars as the patriarch of the Dutton family, who have been farming a massive Montana ranch for sixth generations. Hot Daddy simply wants to wear his cowboy hat in peace, but instead has to deal with local politicians, land developers and never ending family chaos. It’s Succession for cowboys, The Sopranos with cattle, and season five is about to drop on Neon. Get amongst it. / Tara Ward

The movies

The Lost City (on Neon from November 1)

The Lost City feels like a film from another era. A lost era, perhaps. It’s an action-comedy in the vein of Romancing the Stone (if you don’t know what that is, ask your parents) starring Sandra Bullock as a romance novelist and Channing Tatum as her cover model, who are trying to escape a billionaire (a deranged, brilliant Daniel Radcliffe) who wants to find the lost city described in one of her books. If what you’re missing from today’s cinema is charisma, chemistry and celebrity, then look no further than The Lost City for a good time. / SB

Causeway (on Apple TV+ from November 4)

A return that has been a long time coming: Jennifer Lawrence returning to indie cinema, the genre that made her famous, and made her a star. This film, directed by Broadway stalwart Lila Neugebauer, sees the actor playing a soldier who suffers from a traumatic brain injury while deployed in Afghanistan, and, as things tend to be in indie dramas, she has a hard time adjusting. Brian Tyree Henry, and a bunch of American stage legends (Linda Emond, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jayne Houdyshell) support. For the literary types, Ottessa Moshfegh is one of the co-writers here. One to watch, given all those names. / SB

My Policeman (on Apple TV+ from November 4)

It’s that film with Harry Styles. No, the other one. The one where he plays a closeted gay cop. If that sounds like your thing, congratulations, this film is for you. If it doesn’t, keep on scrolling. / SB
