A new poem from Spellbound by Francis Aschoff, published by 5ever Books. It will be launched at Unity Books Wellington this Wednesday, November 19th.

The Time Will Pass Anyway

Maybe the urge to kill
comes from the softest part of you
seeking justice
I think of when you cut the tip of your finger open with kitchen scissors
didn’t know that kind of slice was possible
blood gushing over bare thighs
a throbbing that made me feel
like anything could happen
Maybe you don’t need to acquire
the stillness of Lake Taupō
you just need to scream
the wool of a black sheep is just as warm
and there’s a burning bush in your eyes
causing a scene is the smallest of sins
when you keep your things in boxes
after living here all this time
Maybe you are already exactly
who you need to be
the house is the only hazard here
don’t stay frozen in memory
when the music is never turning back on
say it with your chest
it’s okay to want more for yourself
I’ll build you something in the dreamscape
I’ll buy myself a strong suit
I’ll believe you
a wish on an eyelash still counts
if you pluck it yourself
we’ll waltz with the flowers
and eat dessert for dinner
we’ll create a new stage of grief
where you get everything you want
