In search of some levity this week, we’re cataloguing national treasures like Butts Valley Road, Cockburn Street and Ruba Way. (Content warning, obviously.)

Get your eyes out of the gutter and look up instead – our street signs present endless opportunities for puerile humour. While most streets are, officially, named after sensible things like people or geographic features, anyone looking for a lol will discover that New Zealand’s streets are filled with euphemisms and double entendres.

Surnames that might have given their honoured namesakes grief in the schoolyard – Cockburn, Ball and Dick – endure for new generations of tweens to giggle at in Grey Lynn, Redcliffs and Reefton. Some streets share their name with genital terminology or sexual synonyms; you’ll find Bone Crescent in Hāwera and Spooners Bush Road in Wakefield. Others, in the case of Whangārei’s Bush Haven Drive, are practically poetic. Many rest on the power of slang and the annals of the Urban Dictionary: Somerville in Auckland is home to Gooch Place and Feelding has a Roots Street. A handful (sorry) of street names even provide a full package (sorrrry) of bawdy humour, as is the case with Tauranga’s Ruba Way. Translations of certain te reo Maōri words bring alternate meanings to locations like Tara Crescent and Ure Road (vagina and penis respectively). Not to mention the fact any sign with “rise” in the title is ripe for innuendo.
