The European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has proposed that Canada become the European Union’s first ever “associate member”, a category of membership that does not yet exist. Canada’s prime minister Mark Carney has welcomed the suggestion and discussions look set to continue.

Talking to Euronews, the president of European Parliament Roberta Metsola says Australia and New Zealand might follow.

The European Union was formed after the second world war to discourage war between European nations and encourage trade. Eurovision is an increasingly boycotted music competition.
