Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, is scheduled to arrive in New Zealand late this Friday. This is the first visit to New Zealand from an Indian prime minister in 40 years.

It is also arguably the most significant state visit New Zealand has received since President Xi Jinping of China arrived more than a decade ago.

Modi’s visit to New Zealand is, in part, an acknowledgement and celebration of the New Zealand/India free trade agreement, which is yet to be ratified, but was signed in April.
