After weeks of rumours that National MPs were plotting to overthrow their leader, prime minister Christopher Luxon today called a vote of confidence on himself.
When Luxon emerged from today’s two-and-a-half-hour caucus meeting, he announced that he had won the secret ballot, saying, “To put that media speculation to rest, I moved a formal motion of confidence in my leadership. That motion was passed, confirming what I have been saying; I have the support of my caucus as their leader.”
There are currently 200 days until New Zealand’s general election.
