On August 6, prime minister Christopher Luxon said he would hold a referendum on MMP if re-elected. Luxon floated the idea on Kerre Woodham Mornings on Newstalk ZB in response to a listener text. Pressed on whether he would commit to a referendum if returned to office, he said: “Yeah, I think I would.”

So, should New Zealand ditch MMP? To decide that, it might help to first know how the electoral system actually works.
