Over in Australia, Victoria and Tasmania have made public transport free to help with the fuel crisis. The Pakistani government made public transport in Islamabad and Punjab free for 30 days. In the Philippines, Manila temporarily implemented free commuter rides by subsidising the city’s shuttle drivers.
Proponents of free public transport say it addresses both the capacity and cost issues caused by the fuel crisis, which has seen oil prices skyrocket due to the war in the Middle East and closure of the Hormuz Strait.
