David Welch is a senior lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Auckland. His research interests include developing and fitting phylogenetic models to epidemiology (so-called "phylodynamics"). Nigel French is a professor of food safety and veterinary public health at Massey University. He is an infectious disease epidemiologist specialising in the application of genomics for the control of diseases transmitted between animals and people (zoonoses).
