Tenzing, coming to Apple TV this week (Photo: Supplied)

We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.

Tenzing (Apple TV, October 16)

With Mount Everest first being summited in 1953, it’s a surprise that it's taken Hollywood this long to turn the conquering of the world's tallest peak into a big-budget film. That all changes with Tenzing, a film that shines the spotlight on Sherpa Tenzing Norgay (Genden Phuntsok), the mythic mountaineer who scaled Everest alongside Sir Edmund Hillary (Tom Hiddleston). The film might appear to move through the typical beats of a prestige biopic, but owing to director Jennifer Peedom’s stewardship and a screenplay informed by Tenzing’s son, these well worn conventions are given “a refreshing spin”.

Crystal Lake (Neon, October 14)

Created by Brad Caleb Kane (It: Welcome to Derry), and set eight years before the events of Friday the 13th, this A24-produced prequel to the monolithic 1980 slasher follows Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees, a grief-stricken mother unable to move on from the loss of Jason (Callum Vinson), her young, sickly son who drowned in the town lake. And when shadowy figures from Pam’s past come knocking, a disturbing chain of events is set into motion that will push her to the bloody brink. Shot on location at the original Crystal Lake, this gloriously gory TV show is one for fans of the macabre.

Please Like Me (Neon, October 13)

The brainchild of Australian comedian Josh Thomas, the semi-autobiographical Please Like Me, which “raised the bar for Australian TV comedy,” stars Thomas as Josh, a socially awkward 20-something-year-old who is struggling to navigate his first decade of adulthood after being dumped by his girlfriend and realising that he is gay. Labelled as “the gold standard for a comedy that could make people laugh but only after tearing their hearts out,” the beloved Please Like Me may well be one of the best TV shows of the 2010s.

VisionQuest (Disney+, October 14)

Paul Bettany’s Vision has long been a mainstay of the MCU, but the philosophical android has never had the screen all to himself. That’s changing in VisionQuest, the end to the WandaVision trilogy. In the existential TV show, he’s attempting to understand who he is by communicating with the personas embedded in his programming. There’s also a mysterious teenager who may be his reincarnated son. With Avengers: Doomsday right around the corner, VisionQuest is a must-watch for any die-hard Marvelite.

Tenor: My Name is Pati (Neon, October 12)

Helmed by Rebecca Tansley (The Heart Dances), Tenor: My Name is Pati tenderly documents the tenacious rise of brothers Pene and Amitai Pati, the Samoan-Kiwi pair who went from singing in South Auckland church halls to platinum-selling success with trio Sol3 Mio and international opera debuts. Shot across seven countries and featuring never-before-seen backstage moments, this “pitch-perfect, intimate portrait” of the immensely talented duo “sings with warmth, humility and heart.”

Pick of the Flicks: Long Way North (MĀORI+, October 16)

First premiering at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award, Long Way North, which has been described as “family entertainment of the highest order,” follows the feisty Sasha (Christa Théret), a young Russian aristocrat living in 19th-century Saint Petersburg. When her beloved grandfather, a renowned explorer, goes missing, the 15-year-old embarks on an adventure-filled quest to find him at the hazardous North Pole. The Studio Ghibli-esque Long Way North, “the sort of cartoon discerning parents are constantly seeking to enrich their kids' imaginations,” is one for the whole whānau.
