Obsession: coming this week to HBO Max (Image: Supplied)
We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.
Yaga (Neon, October 22)
Fresh off its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and starring Hudson Williams (Heated Rivalry) alongside Noah Reid (Schitt's Creek), this adaptation of Kat Sandler’s hit play reimagines the myth of Baba Yaga and follows Rapp (Reid), a private eye who arrives in the small coastal town of Whittock to investigate the disappearance of Henry Park (Williams), a commercial fishery heir and local party boy. The occult procedural also features Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) as Katherine, an enigmatic university professor who has a penchant for younger men. Releasing just in time for Halloween, Yaga is one for fans of Supernatural and True Blood.
Erebus: Into the Unknown (Neon, October 26)
Bringing to life “a tragedy from the past that continues to have relevance amid today’s unfolding news headlines,” this haunting documentary recounts and reenacts the experiences of the disaster victim identification team sent to investigate Air New Zealand Flight 901, the sightseeing flight which crashed into the side of Mount Erebus in Antarctica, killing all 257 passengers and crew members onboard. A “compelling mix of documentary and drama,” Erebus: Into the Unknown may clock in at a sprightly 70 minutes, but it certainly packs a punch.
Did Someone Happen to Mention Me? (Netflix, October 22)
In Did Someone Happen to Mention Me? Japanese screen icon Koji Yakusho (Perfect Days) is the legendary Gen Takasegawa. Fresh off his triumphant turn as King Lear at the hallowed Shakespeare’s Globe, the household name returns home to Japan for the first time in two years. Upon his homecoming Takasegawa is confronted with an unimaginable reality: “not only ordinary people, but even his own family and colleagues no longer know who he is.” He’s then forced to fight his way back into the spotlight in a comedy-drama that is bound to be a crowd-pleaser.
The Terror (Neon, October 23)
In this small-screen adaptation of Dan Simmons' 2007 novel The Terror, which fictionalizes Captain Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated charting of the fabled Northwest Passage, the Oscar-nominated Ciarán Hinds (Belfast) is Franklin. Setting sail from England in 1845, his ship the HMS Erebus, as well as the HMS Terror, became locked in pack ice off King William Island in 1846. After that, the entire expedition vanished, so the horror drama takes a few Lovecraftian liberties in imagining the fate of Franklin and his two doomed ships. Described as a “grand treatise on colonial folly,” The Terror will chill you to the bone.
Bama Rush (HBO Max, October 21)
Helmed by Rachel Fleit (Introducing, Selma Blair), the revealing Bama Rush follows four students at the University of Alabama from their recruitment period preparations in the summer of 2022 to the anxiously awaited bid day, the occasion where rushees find out if they have been invited to join a sorority. The insightful documentary, which spotlights “an exclusionary environment that views beauty, wealth, privilege, and conformity as the highest of ideals,” will make you glad that this collegiate tradition doesn’t exist here in Aotearoa.
Pick of the Flicks: Obsession (HBO Max, October 22)
You might have been living under a rock if you haven’t heard of Obsession, the low-budget horror film which has become one of the most profitable productions in Hollywood history. Helmed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, the “exhilarating” film follows Bear (Michael Johnston), a shy music-shop employee who’s helplessly in love with his friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette). He uses the mysterious Monkey's Paw-like "One Wish Willow" to win the heart of his crush, but before long, Bear’s fantasy turns into a blood-curdling nightmare. “A truly effective psychological horror that marks the theatrical debut of a singular horror vision,” Obsession is not for the faint of heart.
