New to Streaming: What to watch on Netflix NZ, Neon and more this week

We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.

Carrie (Prime Video, October 7)

From Mike Flanagan, the crazed mind behind The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, comes Carrie, the latest adaption of Stephen King’s iconic 1974 novel that stars Summer H. Howell as the titular troubled teenager. Owing to a clique of schoolground bullies and her domineering mother's (Samantha Sloyan) influence, her mystic telekinetic powers emerge in a blood-curdling incident. The 1976 iteration of Carrie may have set a high bar, but with Flanagan in charge, there’s cause for excitement.

Animals (Netflix, October 9)

In this tense thriller directed by and featuring Ben Affleck, the acclaimed American actor is Mark Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped. He and wife Abigail (Kerry Washington) are given a few hours to come up with the ransom payment, but with most of their money having been spent on Kimball’s mayoral campaign, the two must get their hands dirty to save their son. Like The Town and The Rip, the white-knuckle Animals is bound to be one hell of a wild ride.

Small Prophets (Apple TV, October 7)

From Detectorists writer and director Mackenzie Crook comes Small Prophets, a “gentle, jewel-like, unhurried masterpiece that is funny, profound and manages to break and mend your heart in equal measures.” In this gem of a TV show, Pearce Quigley is Michael Sleep, an eccentric and lonely man whose beloved partner Clea disappeared seven years ago. In an attempt to learn what happened to her, he turns to homunculi; tiny, prophetic spirits that he hides in his garden shed. Small Prophets, an “impossible marvel of TV making” is a charming must-see.

All of Us Strangers (Neon, October 11)

Loosely based on Taichi Yamada’s 1987 novel Strangers, this BAFTA nominated drama follows Andrew Scott as Adam, a struggling screenwriter. At his mostly empty high-rise apartment in London, he begins a tender relationship with his neighbour Harry (Paul Mescal) while mysteriously reconnecting with his deceased parents (Jamie Bell and Claire Foy). Described as “a potent exploration of love and loss that will stay with you long after the credits roll,” the magical All of Us Strangers is sure to cast a spell on you.

Tour De Pharmacy (HBO Max, October 9)

Directed by Jury Duty’s Jake Szymanski, this star-studded follow-up to the fellow sports mockumentary 7 Days in Hell is set during the 1982 Tour de France and lampoons the various controversies surrounding doping in professional cycling. Clocking in at a short and sweet 41 minutes, Tour De Pharmacy doesn’t aim to be anything more than “pure, uncut silliness,” and it’s all the better for it. Even if you’re cycling averse, you can’t pass up on the unbridled goofiness of Tour De Pharmacy.

Pick of the Flicks: Urchin (Neon, October 9)

Helmed by Triangle of Sadness and Babygirl star Harris Dickinson, Urchin, his FIPRESCI Prize winning feature film directorial debut, follows the magnetic Frank Dillane as Mike, a homeless Londoner trapped in a vicious cycle of poverty, addiction and self-destruction. Labelled as a “sad and compelling portrait of someone lost in the fringes,” this spiky Mike Leigh and Ken Loach-esque piece of contemporary British realism isn’t an easy watch by all accounts, but owing to its intelligent direction and revelatory central performance, Urchin is an affecting one.
