188 new Covid-19 cases in the community

There are 188 new Covid-19 cases in the community, reports the Ministry of Health.

This is a decrease from the 208 cases detected yesterday and the 243 the day before, but only 12,830 tests were processed on Waitangi Day (yesterday), down from 16,873 the day before.

The majority of cases, 117, are in Auckland, with 16 new cases in Northland, 15 in Waikato, one in Tairāwhiti, 12 in Lakes, 20 in the Bay of Plenty, one in Hawke’s Bay, one in Mid Central, two in the Hutt Valley and three in Canterbury. There are 14 people in hospital with Covid-19, one of whom is in ICU in Rotorua.

Twenty-seven new cases have been identified at the border.

Regional updates

Seven of today’s 16 new cases in Northland were first announced in yesterday’s update. Of the nine remaining cases, six are in Kerikeri and three are in Whangārei. Nine cases are under investigation to determine whether they are linked to existing cases.

Of the 15 new cases in Waikato today, 12 are linked to previous cases and three under investigation. Nine cases are in Hamilton, one in Ōhaupō, one in Te Kūiti, one in Huntly and one in Waimiha, and locations for the remaining three are under investigation.

The new case in Tairāwhiti is a household contact of an existing case and was already isolating when they tested positive.

Of the 12 new cases in the Lakes DHB today, 11 are linked to known cases, with one under investigation. Two of the cases are in Taupō, with 10 in Rotorua.

Thirteen of the 20 cases in the Bay of Plenty are linked to known cases and seven are under investigation, one of which is likely to be reclassified as historical, said the ministry. Eighteen of these cases are in Tauranga and two are in the eastern Bay of Plenty.

The one new case in Hawke’s Bay remains under investigation.

There is one new case in Palmerston North, which remains under investigation for links to a previously reported case, but had recently returned to the city after travelling outside the region, said the ministry. “At this stage, it is believed there are only a small number of close contacts associated with this case, who will be contacted directly.” The case is isolating at home.

The two new cases in the Hutt Valley are under investigation, and the three new cases in Canterbury are all contacts of known cases and were already isolating when they tested positive.

Yesterday there were 208 cases, while Saturday saw a pandemic peak of 243.
