Eleven more deaths have been added to New Zealand’s Covid death toll, bringing it to 477 since the pandemic began. The seven-day rolling average of reported deaths is 14.

Four of the deaths were people in their 60s, four in their 80s, and three over 90.

Five were female and six were male.

Currently 635 people are in hospital with Covid, and 18 of them are being treated in ICU.

Case numbers are continuing to decline, along with the seven-day rolling average. Today’s seven-day average is 10,843, while last Saturday it was 13,804.

Bodies are continuing to be pulled from the wreckage of a train station in the Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk after a Russian ballistic missile strike.

The mayor of the city said up to 4,000 people, mostly the elderly, women and children, were sheltering in the station as they waited for an opportunity to be evacuated. The city is located in Donetsk, an eastern region that is coming under increasingly heavy fire as Russian forces withdraw from areas further west, including the capital Kyiv.

Dmytro Kuleba, the Ukrainian foreign minister, called the attack a “deliberate slaughter”.

“Russians knew that the train station in Kramatorsk was full of civilians waiting to be evacuated,” he said.

On the remnants of one of the two rockets were painted the Russian words “Za detei”, meaning “For the children”.

The co-owner of Woof!, the Dunedin bar that this week announced it would continue to require vaccine passes for entry, has called up some of the people who “flooded” the bar with fake one-star reviews, apparently in retaliation.

In a Twitter thread, Dudley Benson – who is also an acclaimed musician – described how he attempted to reach some of those who had left the one-star reviews, including a kiwifruit lab technician, a bank business intelligence manager, and “two evangelical Christian brothers, builders from Whangārei”.

While Benson didn’t manage to speak to all the “reviewers” in person, he said it “[felt] great to take some power back” by making contact.

“I’m fed up with randoms trying to sabotage what our team have worked so hard for, without any consequences,” he tweeted. “PS Honestly, don’t mess with a queer business please.”
