91 new Covid cases in the community; PM tests negative

There are 91 new cases of Covid-19 in the community today, in Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Lakes, Bay of Plenty, Tairāwhiti, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington, reports the Ministry of Health.

Omicron is now the dominant variant in the community, says the ministry, so the specific variant will no longer be reported with case numbers.

“Whole genome sequencing continues to take place on all new unlinked cases of Covid-19 and provides additional information to aid public health decisions,” said the ministry. “As cases continue to increase, the priority for whole genome sequencing will be to highlight patterns of virus spread rather than individual cases.”

There is one new case in Northland, who is a household contact of a previously reported omicron case.

There are 65 new cases in Auckland. The 40 cases that were reported yesterday and supposed to be included in the official count today appear not to exist. According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, “The ministry’s IT team have investigated Auckland’s case numbers yesterday. A suspected issue was reconciled, and the numbers for Auckland for yesterday will remain at 56. There are not a further 40 cases to report today.”

There are 17 new cases in Waikato today, with eight linked to previous cases and seven under investigation. Nine are in Hamilton, four in Morrinsville, one in Cambridge and one in Paeroa. Two remain under investigation.

Three new cases are being reported in Rotorua today, all household contacts of previously reported omicron cases.

There is one new case in Tauranga, a household contact of a previously reported omicron case.

There is one new case in Tairāwhiti, linked to an existing case and the Soundsplash music festival in Hamilton. A further four cases are being announced today, but will be officially added to the ministry’s case numbers tomorrow. Three of these cases are also linked to existing cases and Soundsplash. The other is still being investigated.

Two new cases are being reported in Hawke’s Bay, both with links established to a previously reported delta case.

There is one new case in Wellington, linked to an event in Auckland. “Case investigations are under way to identify exposure events that link to this case,” said the ministry. “Continue to check for new locations of interest in the Wellington region on the Ministry of Health’s website.”

Meanwhile, whole genome sequencing has confirmed a case in the Hutt Valley reported yesterday has the omicron variant.

“With recent positive wastewater test results in Porirua treatment plant, we urge anyone who lives in Porirua and Wellington’s northern suburbs to get a test if they feel unwell with Covid-19 like symptoms.”

There are 10 people in hospital with Covid-19 today, none requiring intensive care. Thirty-nine Covid-19 cases have been detected in MIQ.

PM tests negative, will remain in isolation until Tuesday

Meanwhile, the prime minister has tested negative for Covid-19 after sharing a flight with an omicron case last weekend. Jacinda Ardern entered self-isolation last night having been deemed a close contact. The governor general, Dame Cindy Kiro, and a staff member in the prime minister’s office who were on the January 22 Kerikeri-Auckland flight with her have also had negative results.

Ardern will continue to isolate until Tuesday, said a spokesperson, and will chair tomorrow’s cabinet meeting remotely. Deputy prime minister Grant Robertson will front the post-cabinet press conference.
