The Spinoff presents the video premiere of SWIDT’s ‘Ric Flair (Wooo!)’, featuring “Dirty” Dave O’Connor, “Onehunga Dragon” Jordan Invincible, “Phat” Paul Stoodon, Reggie Handsome and Israel ‘The Stylebender’ Adesanya.
With their new single, SWIDT join the long line of rappers to pay homage to Ric Flair, a legend of American wrestling with championships spanning the WWF, WWE, NWA and WCW from his debut in 1972 until his retirement 40 years later.
SWIDT grew up watching Ric Flair on late-night TV in the 90s and quickly became fans of his outlandish style, his loud mouth and his dirty tricks.
“He embodies the whole out-there nature of rap,” SWIDT MC Spycc told Sniffers earlier this month. “It’s about being loud, flashy, flamboyant, and fly, and so is he. I feel like that is what connects him to a lot of hip-hop artists. It’s not even about vocalising it; it’s about the swag. He used to rock custom made robes. You see rappers like Ghostface Killah and that rocking robes. I’m sure it’s connected … Our angle entering the rap game was to be flamboyant, all in Hawaiian shirts, loud and proud, and just being super confident. Ric Flair’s whole image and branding embodied that.”
