Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee (ThreeNow, August 6)
Having taken home the Logie Award for most popular new talent across the ditch, Guy Mont and his spelling bee is going from strength to strength. Billed by The Spinoff’s Tara Ward as “an absolute joy,” the latest local season of the self-titled TV show that emerged from the chaos of the pandemic features the likes of Oscar Kightley, Sam Campbell, Madeleine Sami, Lynda Topp, Jason Gunn and Anika Moa. A “lot of nostalgic fun, and deeply maddening in the way that the best gameshows are,” Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee is an A+ watch.
Settling (ThreeNow, August 6)
Created by and starring Shortland Street and Packed to the Rafters star Hannah Marshall, local romcom Settling follows Harriet and Sal (Pax Assadi), two disillusioned 30-somethings. When they reconnect at a high school reunion, the former best friends are reminded of a decades-old marriage pact they made, and decide to tie the knot to satisfy familial and societal expectations. Exploring the riotous marital journey that changes their perception of love and each other, Settling may well be proof that there’s life left in the romcom genre.
Paris Memories (MĀORI+, August 7)
Directed by Alice Winocour, whose brother survived the 2015 terrorist attack at the Bataclan concert hall in Paris, this “deep-feeling drama about the aftermath of a terror attack” follows Virginie Efira in her César best award-winning turn as Mia. Three months after surviving a terrorist attack in a Paris brasserie, the journalist and translator is attempting to piece her life back together by retracing and disentangling her fragmented memories of that traumatic night. The devastating Paris Memories is the kind of film “that lingers in the mind long after the credits roll.”
Paddy Gower Has Issues (ThreeNow, August 4)
Aotearoa’s favourite journalist Paddy Gower is once again joined by Wellington Paranormal’s Karen O’Leary to spotlight the issues that matter to everyday New Zealanders in this multi-award-winning current affairs programme. From the dangers of unapproved peptide products to the rising cost of health insurance, Gower and O’Leary are on the case – and they’re advocating for real, concrete change.
Ms. X (ThreeNow, August 3)
Set in Tāmaki Makaurau and starring Melissa George (The Mosquito Coast) alongside Dean O’Gorman (The Almighty Johnsons), the darkly comic, action-packed six-part dramedy follows George as the titular Ms. X, a stay-at-home mother of two. Suspecting her husband of having an affair, she joins forces with Oscar (O’Gorman), an old high-school friend turned bumbling private eye. Inadvertently, the out-of-their-depth duo soon find themselves falling head first into a life of crime. Reminiscent of Barry and Mr Inbetween, Ms. X is “quirky crime at its best”.
Pick of the Flicks: Sentimental Value (Neon, August 9)
Becoming the first Norwegian film to win the best international feature film Oscar, Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value “sneaks up on you like great fiction.” The film follows Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) as they reunite with their estranged father and filmmaker Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård). His next film, which was envisioned as a family affair but pivots to star an American starlet (Elle Fanning), soon opens up old wounds. Blending “theme and character in a way that allows it to live in your mind after you see it,” Sentimental Value was labelled as one of the best films of 2025 for a reason.
