A Remarkable Place To Die (TVNZ+, September 13)

Chelsie Preston Crayford is back as Detective Anais Mallory, star of the “sleek and scenic” A Remarkable Place To Die. Still haunted by the gruesome murder of her sister, the diligent Anais is hell-bent on solving another startling homicide that may finally reveal why her sister was killed in the first place. Also starring such local talents as Matt Whelan and Roimata Fox, alongside newcomers to the series JJ Fong and Antonia Prebble, this picturesque murder mystery is tailor-made for fans of The Brokenwood Mysteries and One Lane Bridge.

The Master (MĀORI+, September 13)

Directed by the prodigious Paul Thomas Anderson and starring the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman, the Oscar-nominated The Master tells the story of Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), a heavy-drinking World War II veteran and drifter. He’s struggling to adjust to life in post-war America when he falls under the spell of Lancaster Dodd (Hoffman), the leader of a Scientology-like cult known as The Cause. “Brilliant, mysterious and unbearably sad”, The Master is simply “unmissable”.

Robyn Malcolm: Menopause and Us (TVNZ+, September 7)

In Robyn Malcolm: Menopause and Us, one part of the illuminating locally-made docuseries Documentary New Zealand, the esteemed Aotearoa actor is setting out to explore the harsh realities of menopause. By intimately sharing her own journey and through candid conversations with other women, she’ll uncover expert insights, challenge taboos, and shed light on the misconceptions that leave so many women left in the dark. 

Common Side Effects (HBO Max, September 7)

Described as “the kind of indie-animation oddity you might‘ve stumbled upon at 3am on 90s MTV,” this psychedelic conspiracy thriller follows high school friends Marshall (Dave King) and Frances (Emily Pendergast). They reconnect after Marshall discovers the Blue Angel Mushroom, a miraculous mushroom that appears to heal almost all illnesses and injuries. But a conspiracy is afoot as the DEA, big pharma, and a cabal of international businessmen are working to sinisterly suppress the existence of the magical mushroom. “Unpredictable and genuinely exciting”, Common Side Effects looks like one hell of a trip.

Oh, Canada (Neon, September 12)

Directed by Taxi Driver screenwriter Paul Schrader, Oh, Canada stars Richard Gere as dying director Leonard Fife. Played by Gere in the present and by Gen Z heartthrob Jacob Elordi in the film’s flashbacks, this aching drama interrogates the director’s life as he gives a final, confessional interview to two of his former students. Taking on “grand themes of memory, mortality, and artistic self-reckoning, to formally ragged but sincerely moving effect”, Oh, Canada is sure to knock the wind out of you.

Last Seen (Apple TV, September 9)

Filmed entirely in Victoria, Australia, this six-part thriller Last Seen follows Patrick Brammall as Ian, a troubled police dispatcher whose life fell apart when his young daughter disappeared without a trace 11 years ago. But when he receives a distress call from a teenage girl he is certain is his daughter, he will stop at nothing to find her and reunite his broken family, whatever the cost. Reminiscent of The Dry and Black Snow, Last Seen is a must-watch if you love a white-knuckle crime drama set down under.

Pick of the Flicks: 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (Neon, September 7)

In 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the “finest of the 28 franchise by a blood-curdling mile” that kicks off where the sequel ended, the bewildered Spike (Alfie Williams) is now in the “care” of the Fingers, a horrifying gang led by the psychopathic Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell). Also returning is the “phenomenal” Ralph Fiennes as the orange-skinned Dr Ian Kelson, who makes a discovery that could turn the world on its head. Labelled as a “gnarly, mind-bending trek through inhumanity,” 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is a macabre masterwork that is bound to make your blood run cold.
