Good Bones (ThreeNow, Neon, September 17)
In locally-made dark comedy Good Bones, Josh Thomson is Sal, a risk-averse bank worker who buys a dilapidated house at auction to secure a future for himself and his pregnant wife Meghan (Aidee Walker). But when a spine-chilling decades-old mystery connected to the ramshackle property rears its head, things quickly go awry. Meghan is desperate to crack the case, but Sal is trying not to drown in the mounting pressures of a mammoth renovation. Reminiscent of Housebound, and also starring Michael Hurst, Wesley Dowdell, Craig Hall and Justine Smith, Good Bones is bound to be a frightening delight.
Taskmaster NZ (TVNZ+, September 14)
The wait is over as the silliest show on television returns for a brand new side-splitting season. But who’s stepping into the Taskmaster arena this time around? The five familiar faces taking on this ultimate test of creativity and composure are Rose Matafeo, Dave Fane, Morgana O’Reilly, Rhys Mathewson and Hoani Hotene. All competing for the approval and golden bust of the formidable Taskmaster Jeremy Wells, expect the unexpected in the “comedy competition that prides itself on being completely pointless.”
SNL UK (September 14)
Featuring New Zealand comedian Joseph Moore on the writing staff, this British adaptation of the iconic American late-night live variety show is returning for a hotly-anticipated second season. The series regulars may be up-and-coming stand-up comedians and social media stars, but SNL UK can count upon the eccentric Jeff Goldblum to commence the proceedings of this upcoming season with a bang. Labelled as a “joyous shake-up of the British comedy landscape,” SNL UK is no pale imitation of its American forebear.
Slow Horses (Apple TV, September 16)
Adapted from the sixth and seventh volumes of Mick Herron’s best-selling spy novels, season six of Slow Horses “bounces back after a relatively down fifth season to deliver to fans what might be its best outing to date.” Beginning in the wake of a tragic death, the Slough House rejects are on the run from a pair of cut-throat Russian assassins. They must also contend with the savage Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving), a CIA agent gone rogue. An “outing that’s entertaining, suspenseful, and honestly moving,” Slow Horses remains as thrilling as ever.
Time (Neon, September 15)
This award-winning British anthology crime drama follows the lives of those incarcerated and employed by His Majesty’s Prison Service across two seasons. The “enraging” first season stars Sean Bean as a guilt-stricken former teacher and Stephen Graham as a long-standing prison officer, while the “fantastic” follow-up season features Jodie Whittaker as a single mother, Bella Ramsey as a pregnant addict and Tamara Lawrance as a woman imprisoned for life. Like “a punch to the face, but in a good way,” Time is must-watch television.
Pick of the Flicks: Bernie (Neon, September 16)
In this true-crime comedy helmed by American auteur Richard Linklater, Jack Black is the titular Bernie, an East Texas mortician. Based on Skip Hollandsworth’s 1998 article “Midnight in the Garden of East Texas,” the droll film chronicles the odd relationship between the sweet-natured Bernie and Marjorie Nugent (Shirley MacLaine), a widely hated wealthy widow who was 42 years his senior. Described as one of “the finest comedy films of the 21st century to date,” the pitch-black Bernie is proof that the truth can be stranger than fiction.
