New To Streaming: What to watch on Netflix NZ, Neon and more this week

We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.

If you like great dramas about feuding families: Territory (Netflix, October 24)

This big-budget Australian Netflix drama is like the love child of Succession and Yellowstone: set in the wop-wops at Marianne Station, the largest cattle station in the world, the heir to the Lawson family kingdom dies and with no clear successor, the family are pitted against each other as they fight for power. Amplifying the bitter family feud are forbidden romances, entrenched misogyny and an ensemble of A-list Australian actors all wearing fugly fur felt hats. Local actors Sara Wiseman and Jay Ryan also star. Territory is one to watch if you love gripping dramas on an epic scale.

If you love TV medical dramas: Doctor Odyssey (Disney+, October 24)

From Ryan Murphy, the brilliant mind behind Glee and American Horror Story, comes Doctor Odyssey. On board a luxury cruise ship, Dawson’s Creek Joshua Jackson plays the titular Doctor, who must navigate unique medical crises far from shore with the help of his small but mighty crew. Doctor Odyssey is giving Grey’s Anatomy at sea and with a rotating roster of guest stars, à la The Love Boat, and a “silly but serendipitous feel, the show could be just what the Doctor ordered.

If you like behind-the-scenes sports documentaries: Simone Biles Rising, Part 2 (Netflix, October 25)

Part one of Simone Biles Rising set a high bar with candid insights into the gymnast’s shock exit from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and her journey to return to the world stage. Part two is the epic conclusion that sees Biles fight against mental health struggles, the stigma of being a “grandma gymnast”, and online trolls as she attempts to secure her legacy as the GOAT at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Marvel at her jaw-dropping athletic routines from the comfort of your sofa or bed. Biles’s story is inspiring, but don’t take it as a sign to attempt a triple-double.

If you enjoy taut psychological thrillers: Before (Apple TV+, October 25)

Billy Crystal is an affable, funny guy. But in Before, the new thrilling miniseries from Apple TV, he’s traded his comedic chops for dramatic ones. Crystal is Eli, an accomplished child psychiatrist tortured by the loss of his wife. One day, he encounters a troubled young boy who seems to have an eerie connection to his past. With shades of M. Night Shyamalan and the tagline “your past can drag you under”, Before is for those who enjoy unexpected twists and turns – you’ll need a crystal ball to unravel its mysteries.

If you like rip-roaring acton films: Monkey Man (Neon, October 26)

Dev Patel first appeared on our screens as Anwar, the specky-faced teenager in Skins. He’s now starring in his directorial debut, Monkey Man, avisceral love letter to global action cinema“. Patel’s masked character is on a violent quest for vengeance against the elites of a fictional Mumbai-like city. It’s impossible to look away or know what’s coming next, according to critic Brian Tallerico. The film is a biting exploration of India’s caste system, religion, right-wing nationalism and poverty with blood-soaked, bone-crunchingly awesome fight scenes. Move over James Bond and John Wick.
