New To Streaming: What to watch on Netflix NZ, Neon and more this week

A lime green background with four television screens featuring the latest releases of the week

We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.

Memory of a Killer (Neon, January 27)

Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey swaps the operating room for a cut-throat world of smoke and mirrors, playing a fearsome hitman moonlighting as a photocopier salesman and father. The twist? He’s diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, a foe that crumbles the walls separating his two compartmentalised lives. A redemptive story about a man who is losing his memory but gaining a conscience,” this thriller is sure to be a cut above the rest.

Bridgerton (Netflix, January 29)

Split into two titillating parts, Bridgerton’s hotly-anticipated fourth season follows Luke Thompson’s Benedict Bridgerton, the titular family’s second-eldest sibling, as he “who once looked on dreamily from the corner of the ballroom is now ready for his own Bridgerton love story.” Embarking on a Cinderella-style romance with Yerin Ha’s Sophie Baek, he meets his love at Lady Bridgerton’s famed masquerade ball, but her identity remains a mystery behind a shimmering silver mask. A heady cloud of pleasure and true love,” Bridgerton is the perfect guilty pleasure watch.

The Wrecking Crew (Prime Video, January 28)

Shot across Hawaiʻi and Aotearoa, the buddy cop comedy The Wrecking Crew stars honorary New Zealander Jason Momoa and man mountain Dave Bautista as feuding half-brothers. Forced to come together to solve the conspiracy behind their father’s murder, the loose-cannon cop and hard-edged Navy SEAL soon find themselves in over their heads, facing off against the merciless Yakuza on the streets of Oʻahu. With our own Temuera Morrison and Piha’s Lion Rock also appearing, The Wrecking Crew promises a no-holds-barred good time.

Marvel’s Wonder Man (Disney+, January 28)

More akin to Seth Rogan’s The Studio than The Avengers, Wonder Man sees Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an aspiring actor who is quietly developing superpowers. In this not-so ordinary origin story, Williams has a chance meeting with failed actor Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) and learns that a legendary director is remaking a superhero film that he is perfect for. The two then decide to join forces, doggedly pursuing life-changing roles in the blockbuster remake. If you love self-aware humour and are sick of conventional superheroes, Marvel’s Wonder Man is the show for you.

Mistress Dispeller (DocPlay, January 26)

A gem from last year’s Whānau Mārama: New Zealand International Film Festival, Elizabeth Lo’s Mistress Dispeller documents the life of Wang Zhenxi, a Chinese woman with an unusual, but increasingly popular profession: she goes undercover to end extramarital affairs. When Zhenxi is hired by Mrs. Li, a heartbroken wife whose husband has taken up a mistress, what unfolds is modest, melancholic and strangely romantic and a profound and searching panorama of loneliness and partnership, where everyone gets a chance to be heard.”

Pick of the Flicks: Predestination (TVNZ+, January 27)

The mind-bending Predestination features Ethan Hawke as Agent Doe, a temporal agent on his final mission: he must travel back in time to 1970s New York to prevent an infamous terrorist from carrying out another devastating attack. Also starring Sarah Snook in her extraordinary breakout role, this one-of-a-kind time-travel saga succeeds in teasing the brain and touching the heart.” Reminiscent of La Jetée and Looper, the less you know about Predestination going into it the better.
