The UV index measures the strength of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation and indicates the risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. In other words, it tells you when to stay inside. In Aotearoa, any UV rating over six is considered a “high-risk” exposure.
“It is concerning to hear that young people might be using a UV index (UVI) of six or above as a guide to tan,” said Emma Shields, evidence and insights lead the Cancer Society. “The higher the UV index number, the less time it takes for your skin to become damaged.”
