The Education and Workforce Committee released a report today on the harm experienced by young people online. The report made 12 recommendations, including restricting “online advertising of alcohol, tobacco, and gambling” in the same way it’s restricted offline and making it easier to hold platforms responsible for the harms they cause through their design and the content they choose to host.
Both the Green Party and the Act Party put forward differing views from the rest of the committee. Both parties were concerned about the recommendation to move forward with a social media ban for under-16s, and the recommendation for a national regulator to “explore how to stop the use of VPNs”.
