On Monday, New Zealand’s minister for trade and investment, Todd McClay, signed a free trade agreement with India. The Labour Party has agreed to support the deal, meaning it will become law.
India has agreed to cut tariffs on a number of New Zealand products, including lamb, wool, coal, most forestry and industrial products, kiwifruit, apples, mānuka honey and wine. Most dairy products are notably excluded from the agreement.
In return, all Indian goods will have duty-free access to New Zealand, the NZ government will promote investment in India and will also provide 1,667 three-year temporary employment visas to skilled Indian workers each year (less than 6% of the skilled work visas New Zealand gives out annually).
