New to Streaming: What to watch on Netflix NZ, Neon and more this week

We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.

Licence to Drive (ThreeNow, Neon, November 4)

Now in its second season, the inspiring and illuminating Licence to Drive features a new group of Kiwi drivers with disabilities who are taking on the challenge of getting behind the wheel. Alongside some returning fan favourites who are taking the next step in their driving journeys, the feel-good watch sees the drivers work with their instructors, whānau and support networks to make this transformative rite of passage work for them. Be sure to strap in for this heartfelt ride.

Scarfies (Neon, November 7)

Few Kiwi films are as beloved as Robert Sarkies 1999 film Scarfies, the cult classic comic thriller “that gave Taika Waititi his big break.” Shot and set in Dunedin, this homage to the city's notorious student culture follows five first-year students who move into a dilapidated and seemingly empty flat. In the basement of their filthy but free flat they stumble upon a stash of marijuana that they sell to a local dealer. Their sudden windfall goes sideways when the plant's real owner returns, commencing a “skilfully modulated descent into progressively darker, crazier territory.”

Black Doves (Netflix, November 5)

According to one critic Black Doves is “destined to become one of the most beloved spy thrillers of the decade, if given a second season”. Let’s see if they’re right as Keira Knightley’s Helen Webb and Ben Whishaw’s Sam Young are back and they’ve got plenty of unfinished business. She’s continuing to feed classified national secrets to the covert Black Doves organisation whilst her husband, Wallace Webb (Andrew Buchan), is preparing to become prime minister. It’s not long till before Webb reunites with Young, and together they’ll come face-to-face with old friends and foes as they fight to protect those that they love.

Apocalypse (TVNZ+, November 7)

In Apocalypse, a ridiculous end-of-days reality survival TV show, fourteen ordinary people from the UK and Australia are put to the ultimate test. This group of unsuspecting and hapless strangers are split into two rival camps and abandoned in a town that has no electricity, running water or food. They’re unaware of each other's existence and must survive for 28 days. Described as “an absolute slam dunk,” Apocalypse is one to smugly enjoy from the comfort of a sofa.

North by Northwest (HBO Max, November 6)

With the recent passing of the Oscar-winning Eva Marie Saint, one of the last icons of the golden age of Hollywood, now’s the time to revisit Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, the Master of Suspense’s “funniest, most ridiculous and visually ambitious film.” In the spy thriller the dashing and legendary Cary Grant is Roger Thornhill, a successful Madison Avenue advertising executive who is mistaken for another man and kidnapped in broad daylight by the agents of a mysterious organization. After escaping his sinister captors, Thornhill is then pursued across America. He, of course, has a Hitchcock blonde for company; Saint’s Eve Kendall.

Pick of the Flicks: Possible Love (Netflix, November 6)

Fresh from its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival where it won the Grand Jury Prize, Possible Love is the latest outing from the acclaimed Lee Chang-dong (Burning). The sprawling story follows two married couples from contrasting social classes whose paths cross in a “profound meditation on trauma, loss of dignity, yearning and class envy.” Labelled as “one for the ages,” this Oscar Contender is a must-see.
