Welcome to the Cheat Sheet, a clickable, shareable, bite-sized FAQ on the news of the moment. Today, Henry Oliver answers your questions about Donald Glover’s mysterious Pharos Experience announcement.
So… Donald Glover is coming to play a Childish Gambino show in New Zealand?
Yes. Kind of. Yes – he’s playing. Well, Childish Gambino (his current, not long for this world, musical nomenclature) is playing. At least we think he is.
What? What does that mean?
Well, his once-in-a-blue-moon show, called the Pharos Experience, is coming to New Zealand on 23-25 November 2018.
Cool! What’s that?
We don’t know.
We don’t know?
Well, the first Pharos Experience was at Joshua Tree in California over three nights in 2016. He debuted a bunch of songs that would become his Grammy-winning album “Awaken, My Love!”
Cool. So what happened there?
It was some crazy desert concert that was “high sensory”, whatever that means.
Like lasers ‘n’ shit?
Yeah, lasers ‘n’ shit. And glow in the dark stuff I think. And a cool dome with animations and all sorts of stuff. I mean, Donald Glover is basically a genius (read this) so who knows?
Damn! The ‘grams must have looked amazing!
Nope. No phones. Your phone is your ticket (one per person per phone with some face identification thing to keep those dirty dirty scalpers at home) but after that, you gotta put it in a black bag that you can only open when you leave.
Cool! So where is it again?
We don’t know.
We don’t know?
Okay, it’s somewhere near Auckland. Or, to be more (actually less) specific, Auckland is the closest airport.
And who’s playing?
We don’t know.
We don’t know?
Well, it’s Childish Gambino. And, if we’ve learnt anything from history (we haven’t), Donald Glover will play music from his forthcoming (and probably the last) Childish Gambino album. But, as I said, we don’t know.
And is it a three-night thing, or three one-night things?
We think it’s the latter, but we can’t be sure at this stage.
Great. Thanks. Lot’s of help.
Sorry! Didn’t your mother tell you sarcasm is the lowest form of humour? I’m doing this for your benefit, not mine. Otherwise, why would I want to lower my chances of getting a ticket by telling you about it?
Okay, fine. How much is it?
It’s USD149.
That seems reasonable if it’s some big thing.
Yeah, totally. And you can camp there.
Camp? For three nights?
Last time you could camp overnight but you had to be out by 10am the next morning to clear the way for the next night. So, safe to assume it’s the same here.
Cool. I’m in. How do I get tickets?
Download the app on your phone. It’s called Pharos and it’s in all the app stores.
See you there?
Hope so!
