Mārama (MĀORI+, August 16)
Helmed by debut director Toa Stappard and winning the top prize at the Seattle International Film Festival, this local gothic horror follows Ariāna Osborne as a young Māori orphan who travels from Aotearoa to North Yorkshire in hopes of finding out more about her whakapapa. But when she arrives at the ghostly Hawkser Manor, all is not as it seems. Described by The Spinoff as a “masterclass in modern Māori storytelling,” Mārama is a newfound New Zealand classic.
My Brilliant Career (Netflix, August 13)
Based on Miles Franklin’s iconic novel of the same name, this six-part period drama follows Philippa Northeast as the fiercely independent Sybylla. Her family is determined to marry her off, but the modern young woman has only one burning ambition: to write her way to independence. Her life is turned on its head when the wealthy Harry (Christopher Chung), who was played by Sam Neill in the 1979 adaptation of the novel, takes an interest in her. Ooh la la…
Reacher (Prime Video, August 12)
Man-mountain Alan Ritchson returns as the titular lone-wolf for the fourth season of this “unpretentious action series”. Based on Gone Tomorrow, the 13th book in Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series, the ex-military policeman is drawn into a far-reaching conspiracy after a harrowing chance encounter with a stranger on a train. If the three high-octane previous seasons are anything to go by, this latest season of Reacher will be “hugely fun, packed with punchups and far better than Cruise’s movie efforts”.
Don’t Say Good Luck (Netflix, August 14)
This coming-of-age musical teen drama follows blossoming theatre kid Sophie Birenbaum (Sunny Sandler) as she prepares for her leading role in her high school’s rendition of the musical Waitress. But things go awry when a heartbreaking piece of family news is revealed, shattering her plans for a tour de force opening night performance. Also featuring Melanie Lynskey, New Girl’s Max Greenfield, and Steve Buscemi, Don’t Say Good Luck is one-to-watch if you love to belt show tunes from the top of your lungs.
The Rapture (Neon, August 10)
In the “horrifyingly apt” The Rapture, Ruth Madeley plays Gabrielle Fox, a clinical psychotherapist who, after being paralysed from the waist down in a car accident that killed her husband, takes a job at a high-security psychiatric unit for adolescents. There she meets Bethany Krall (India Amarteifio), a patient who was convicted of murdering her mother and claims to have psychic abilities. With shades of The Haunting of Hill House and Adolescence, this “classic cusp-of-the-apocalypse” TV show is darkly intriguing.
Pick of the Flicks: Marc by Sofia (Neon, August 15)
From Sofia Coppola comes Marc by Sofia, the first nonfiction feature film from the Oscar-winning screenwriter and director of Lost in Translation. The bona fide style icon, in the lead-up to Marc Jacobs’ 2024 paper doll-inspired 40th anniversary runway show, crafts “an admiring, affectionate look at a close friend’s career”. First meeting in 1993, their friendship lends itself to this “intimate delight for fans of both the designer and the director”, one that us bound to be a pleasurable and revealing watch.
