We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.

Night Always Comes (Netflix, August 15)

An adaptation of Willy Vlautin’s novel of the same name, Night Always Comes follows Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby as a struggling woman facing eviction in a city where gentrification is displacing the working class. Reminiscent of Uncut Gems, the high-stakes film unfolds and escalates over one nerve-wracking night, as Kirby desperately attempts to raise the $25,000 she needs to keep a roof over her head. With an all-star cast that includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Zack Gottsagen, and Julia Fox, the relentless Night Always Comes will have you sweating buckets.

Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser (Netflix, August 15)

The weightloss reality competition The Biggest Loser premiered in 2004, becoming an instant cultural phenomenon. 20 years on from its debut, through candid interviews with former contestants, trainers, and producers, Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser sets out to examine the show’s controversial legacy and “the balance between entertainment and wellbeing.” Brace yourself for a haunting behind-the-scenes look at The Biggest Loser, one of the most mean-spirited reality TV shows to ever air.

The Floor (ThreeNow, August 17)

Already an international smash-hit, The Floor is finally heading down under with an Australian adaptation of the high-paced quiz show. Hosted by fan-favourite actor (turned game master) Roger Corser, 81 trivia nerds face off in timed duels on a giant LED floor. Starting with a single tile representing their specialist subject, players battle to win their opponents’ tiles and expand their territory. Whoever conquers the entire floor takes home a whopping cash prize and a lifetime of bragging rights.

FX’s Alien: Earth (Disney+, August 13)

From Noah Hawley, the mind behind FX’s Fargo and Legion, comes the hotly-anticipated Alien: Earth, a rare prequel that serves to enrich its source material, breathing new life into a once-tired franchise.” Set two years before the events of Ridley Scott’s classic sci-fi horror, a mysterious deep-space research vessel and its rag-tag crew of synthetics and soldiers crash-land on a dystopic Earth. The accident exposes billions of potential hosts to its nightmarish extraterrestrial cargo. With this “creepy, crawly wonder” ready to burst onto screens, just remember that in space, no one can hear you scream. The same can’t be said for your living room.

Butterfly (Prime Video, August 13)

Adapted from the acclaimed graphic novel of the same name, Lost star Daniel Dae Kim is David Jung, a Bourne-esque former US intelligence operative. The kickass Jung is trying to stay under the radar amid the hustle and bustle of Seoul, but his murky past comes back to haunt him when his estranged daughter, also a deadly operative, is assigned to kill him. Pitting familial bonds against the cut-throat world of global espionage, Butterfly is “the realization of a longtime dream to bring together American and Korean storytellers” and is bound to be an explosive watch.

Pick of the Flicks: September 5 (Neon, August 12)

Premiering at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, September 5 is a taut thriller that chronicles the 1972 Munich Massacre through the eyes of the ABC Sports crew who made media history with their live coverage of the harrowing event. Just a few hundred metres from the athletes’ village, the ABC team, from the confines of their studio control room, suddenly grapple with the practicalities and ethics of broadcasting a terrorist attack in real time to millions. Described as “a muscular, well-made picture with the tang of cold sweat”, it’s no surprise that September 5 scored an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
