New Zealand First has announced that this election it will be campaigning to “break up the gentailers”. The Green Party has a members’ bill in the biscuit tin from MP Scott Willis that would do the same. The leader of the Labour party, Chris Hipkins, has said he is “open to fundamental changes to New Zealand’s electricity market”.

So, how does New Zealand’s electricity market work? And what is a gentailer? And could we have come up with a better name?
