New Zealand’s prime minister, Christopher Luxon, was at the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau last week when the United Nations released a report stating that the world is likely to pass 1.5°C of warming above pre-industrial levels in the next few years.

Ben McKay, who was in Palau covering the forum for Australian Associated Press, told The Spinoff, “It had a real catalysing effect on Pacific delegates on the need for action.”

Tuvalu’s climate change minister, Dr Maina Talia, told McKay that having read the findings, “I couldn’t sleep last night thinking, ‘how are we going to prepare ourselves?’”
