Hold the front page: The Spinoff’s cover stories for 2022

Introducing a new Spinoff campaign giving some of our biggest 2022 stories the print cover treatment.

The Spinoff is an online magazine. That’s how we have always described our work and our approach. We write, edit and curate our work as if it will be read on the page, with design, images and pull quotes carefully considered. And every week, we aim to publish a “cover story”, whether it be an investigation or culture feature or even a big ranking. This has all been internal thinking because the one thing that The Spinoff doesn’t have is a printed cover. Until now.

Thanks to our friends across the hall at Daylight, The Spinoff is excited to launch The Spinoff Covered – a series showcasing what 2022 would have looked like if The Spinoff had a printed cover.

We chose 12 stories (we decided we’d be a monthly mag) to illustrate a year on The Spinoff. They’re not necessarily the 12 biggest stories or the biggest news scoops we had, but they’re the ones that have felt enduring and, crucially, were fun to bring to life as a cover. Some were originally published with illustrations and these have been refitted for scale. Others have been given custom treatment for the project to give their subjects a whole new life.

We’ve got Heath Davis, Matariki, the parliament protests, Side Eyes, the Hobsonville Ham and more. From today, the covers will be on The Spinoff’s homepage as clickable images to revisit some of the year’s classic, as well as on posters around the motu. It’s a small showing of what we got up to in 2022 and, to be honest, a fun(ky) way to end what has turned out to be a tumultuous and challenging year for many of us.
