A retired nurse who thinks Chris Luxon gets far too much flak

Mary Tahiwi, a 74-year-old retired nurse with brown hair and a blue jacket sits in a busy mall food court.

Mary Tahiwi is voting National and she thinks Chris Luxon isn't getting a fair go.

Mary Tahiwi admits the PM isn’t a natural politician but says he’s the right person in the right job.

Name: Mary Tahiwi

Age: 74

Occupation: Retired nurse

Family/relationship: Married with three children and six grandchildren

Electorate: Albany

Who will you vote for? National

What appeals about National? Chris Luxon is very good, they have high-quality candidates with real work experience rather than career politicians.

What are the three biggest issues for you this election? Health. I still have quite a bit to do with nursing colleagues at Auckland, and I know they're struggling. The cost of petrol. We do a lot of busing about Auckland and travelling overseas. Then something like law and order, because we have a daughter in the police.

Do you discuss politics with your family and friends (and if you do, how do those conversations go)? Yes, with my husband and sisters who are all pro-National, so conversations are smooth and non-contentious.

Describe NZ right now in three words. Really great future.

If you had to get the face of one politician (past or present) tattooed onto your body, who would it be? Chris Luxon. We’ve met him a couple of times, and I also think he’s the right person in the right job. Even though he's not your normal prime minister material, I think he is working the team extremely well.

Will you vote on election day or beforehand? On election day.

What will you do on election night? Watch it on TV.
