NTS-2-June.jpg

We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.

The Traitors New Zealand (ThreeNow, May 31)

The Traitors NZ is back for a thrilling third season, but this time around there’s a new face on the block as Deadloch’s Madeleine Sami takes charge. With a brand new host and a fresh cast of everyday New Zealanders, the ultimate game of deception returns to the haunting Castle Claremont where the titular Traitors and the Faithfuls must battle and backstab their way to the $100,000 grand prize. “Time to steam your cloaks and polish your poison goblets,” because The Traitors NZ is back “for another season of betrayals and banishings.”

Please Don’t Break Anything (YouTube, May 26)

Set in the fictional rural Aotearoa town of Eastern Rivers, the Twin Peaks-esque Please Don’t Break Anything follows a close knit group of mates who gather in honour of their deceased friend. But when unresolved questions surrounding the murky circumstances of their friend’s death bubble to the surface, the group is forced to confront its shared past and innermost secrets. Helmed by and featuring the rising-stars of Aotearoa’s screen industry, this thrilling five-part teenage murder mystery web-series will make your blood run cold.

Appropriation Nation (TVNZ+, May 26)

Actor and comedian Kura Forrester takes audiences on a hilariously insightful journey into the rich world of Māori culture and its widespread commodification, as she uses sharp satire and sidesplitting comedy to explore the complexities of cultural appropriation in today’s global society. This “fresh take” on the importance of cultural appreciation over appropriation also features interviews with haka expert James Webster, Black Fern Leilani Perese, and artist Tāme Iti. The enlightening and inspiring Appropriation Nation is a must-watch.

Two Years Later (TVNZ+, June 5)

Starring Australian heavyweights Brenton Thwaites and Phoebe Tonkin, the eight-part romance drama Two Years Later is set in a post-pandemic world where a blossoming love story was cut short by Covid-19. With life no longer on pause, Ryan (Thwaites) and Emily (Tonkin) decide to reconnect and to go on eight dates to decide if they are truly right for each other. Also starring veteran Kiwi actor Roy Billing, this “tender, funny, unfiltered exploration of modern love” will set your heart ablaze.

Tip Toe (TVNZ+, June 1)

From preeminent showrunner Russell T. Davies (It’s A Sin, Years and Years) comes this tense five-part suburban thriller that depicts an escalating feud between neighbours Leo (Alan Cumming), a gay bar owner, and Clive (David Morrissey), a struggling electrician. Their peaceful coexistence is shattered when one man gives the other his front door key, an act that opens up a world of fear and mistrust and ends in a shocking act of violence. The series has been commended for prodding at “the bubbling rage that feels prevalent in society right now”.

Pick of the Flicks: Limbo (Māori+, June 5)

In Limbo, which is written, directed, shot, and edited by the Indigenous auteur Ivan Sen, the “transcendent” Simon Baker is Travis Hurley, a sorrowful detective who journeys to the desolate Australian outback town of Limbo to investigate the 20-year-old unsolved murder of a young Aboriginal woman. With a “harshly beautiful monochrome veneer,” this outback noir
offers “a searing commentary on the failures of colonial law enforcement and judicial systems in serving Indigenous peoples. Beautifully bleak, Limbo is one for fans of Sweet Country and The Dry.
