We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.
Wednesday (Netflix, August 6)
The legendary Tim Burton and scream queen Jenna Ortega are returning to Nevermore Academy for season two of Wednesday, the third most watched English-language title in Netflix history. At the Hogwarts-like school for supernaturally gifted oddballs, Wednesday (Ortega) has a disturbing vision: her roommate Enid (Emma Myers) will die – and it will be her fault. Vowing to change the future, the sardonic sleuth uncovers a series of shocking secrets, and comes stone-faced to face with old adversaries. This sophomore season of Wednesday is dead set to be bloody “brilliant on every level.”
Outlander: Blood of my Blood (Neon, August 9)
The original Outlander is nearing its final season, but thankfully there’s a new prequel to the epic period romance on the horizon. From the ravaged battlefields of World War I to the rugged Highlands of 18th-century Scotland, the hotly-anticipated Outlander: Blood of my Blood follows Jamie and Claire’s parents as fated couples who must defy the forces that seek to tear them apart. Unlike Outlander, this rousing prequel is a departure from Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling novels, so expect the TV show to unfold in ways that will make your heart blush and pound.
A Taste of Glory (TVNZ+, August 4)
The prestigious Bocuse d’Or is the gastronomic equivalent of the Olympic Games – stand atop the podium and you’ll be etched into the history books. The inspirational local documentary A Taste of Glory follows chef Will Mordido and commis chef Sam Linstrom, the Aotearoa underdogs in Bocuse d’Or. Advised by MasterChef winner Brett McGregor, the trailblazing team are on a quest to introduce local ingredients and dishes to the Eurocentric culinary world. Can Mordido and Linstrom turn up the heat on their competitors, or will they crumble under the pressure? Tune in and see.
Platonic (Apple TV+, August 6)
Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne reunite as best friends Will and Sylvia in Platonic, the TV show that’s “clever, funny, insightful and immediately addictive.” In season two of the charming buddy comedy, the lifelong friends are up to their usual antics with some new, arduous array of mid-life hurdles to contend with. The lives of the co-dependent duo might be in a state of flux, but one thing we can be sure of is that the show will stay true to its name: “Will and Sylvia won’t get together.”
Stolen: Heist of the Century (Netflix, August 8)
From Mark Lewis, the director of Don’t F**k With Cats and the Vatican Girl, comes Stolen: Heist of the Century, recounting the heist that shocked the world. Over one weekend in February 2003, a group of highly-skilled Italian thieves raided a vault in the supposedly secure Antwerp diamond district, pocketing more than $100 million of loose diamonds, gold and silver. The near-flawless heist was more audacious than the plot of any Ocean’s film, so who were these thieving masterminds? And how on Earth did they pull it off? A gem of a documentary that answers some truly bewildering questions.
Pick of the Flicks: The Iron Claw (Netflix, August 10)
Based on the harrowing real-life story of the Von Erichs, a family of big-name wrestlers, Sean Durkin’s The Iron Claw is one of the most heartbreaking films in recent memory. Starring bulked-up heartthrobs Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, and Zac Efron, and set in the ultra-competitive world of professional wrestling in the 1980s, the film is a haunting depiction of brotherhood, familial conflict, and grief. Notably snubbed at the 2024 Oscars despite Efron giving an “astonishing physical performance,” The Iron Claw is sure to deliver a soul-crushing suplex.
