We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.
If you love an experiment in human folly: Taskmaster NZ (TVNZ+, August 6)
We stole the above phrase from comedian Abby Howells, star of the upcoming season of Taskmaster NZ. An off-kilter gameshow of sorts that sees local comedians face off in a series of nonsensical tasks, Taskmaster made a superfan out of Howells, who told us just what the show reveals about the human condition. “I also found that the things I felt the most embarrassed about ended up being my biggest successes, because they’re the funniest,” she said. “Maybe it’s the enjoyment of human folly – we are all imperfect in this life.” We look forward to seeing just how imperfect this season’s cast of Howells, Hayley Sproull, Ben Hurley, Tofiga Fepulea’i and Tom Sainsbury can be.
If you love reality TV: Love Is Blind UK (Netflix, August 7)
The infamous bunker of love is spreading across the globe, with this new British version of the reality series that matches singles by putting them in windowless rooms and making them talk through a wall. “A group of single men and a group of single woman date each other in futuristic rooms known as ‘pods’ and can only communicate through a thin mahogany wall,” we wrote in 2020, having fallen hard for the new reality format. “The experiment? To see if love can be, in fact, blind. The flaw? Every single person cast is extremely conventionally reality TV hot. The surprise? They all fall in love in five seconds. Like, it’s an unprecedented amount of love.”
If you love KJ Apa on a bike: One Fast Move (Prime Video, August 8)
Former Shortland Street and Riverdale star KJ Apa stars in this new action-adventure film about a troubled young man who dreams of becoming a professional motorcycle racer, and who decides to track down his estranged father to help him make it happen. “With the help of his small town love interest and a motorcycle shop owner who moonlights as his mentor, he begins to break down the walls that his father’s absence had built up,” the official blurb says. Expect plenty of speed, drama and haunted looks. Vroom vroom!
If you love to feel one thousand years old: Mean Girls (2024) (Neon, August 6)
We are sick, ill, exhausted and withered to accept that the original Mean Girls movie is now two decades old which, as determined by the crummy laws of the current cinematic universe, has earned it the honour of being rebooted. An adaptation of the smash hit 2018 Broadway musical (yes it’s a movie, based on a musical, based on a movie, based on a book), Mean Girls (2024) is a “Zoomer” take on the millennial classic, dropping some of the more problematic elements and adding a shit tonne more singing. Who or what is Renee Rapp? We don’t know, but we hope to find out more while sulkily watching this weekend, hoodies pulled right around our faces and aviators sunglasses firmly on.
If you like crying over nature: Secret World Of Sound With David Attenborough (Netflix, August 7)
Sir David Attenborough is back to once again take inside the extraordinary world of animals, this time letting his ears be his guide. Whether it is hearing how baby caiman communicate with each other from within the egg, how lions and hyaenas battle in the dark using sound, or how a strange fish has baffled local residents with its eerie hum, we’re looking forward to blasting up the volume and hearing some crazy critter sounds. Also, it’s David Attenborough. The man is 98 bloody years old – the least you can do is watch his damn show.
