The Great New Zealand Music bracket: Which decade is best? GRAND FINAL!!!

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP-LEFT: JULIA DEANS (FUR PATROL), THE STONES, THE HERBS, SCRIBE

While walking through the Volume: Making Music in Aotearoa exhibition at the Auckland Museum, Henry Oliver thought to himself: which decade had the best music? Rather than telling you his answer, he’s asking for yours. Final Round: which decade is definitively The Best?

First, the results from last week’s vote:

Top seed, the 2000s, continued it’s unimpeded run, taking out the 1970s, a pretty strong decade itself, with 61% of the vote. I expected this to be closer. But I also expected Hillary to win. The Falcons, too. And Serina. So what do I know? Statistics is over. Prediction is dead.

The other side of the draw was where the real action was. While the 1980s won against the 1990s reasonably convincingly with 57%, it was pretty close for a while, even running pretty close to 50/50 for an exciting few days before the silent majority woke up and make their voice heard.

So to the third and final round. The Grand Final!

The crowd speaks:

2000s:

“2000s wins me over with Goodshirt, Fur Patrol (“Lydia”), P-Money, Tiki Taane and Scribe also hold strong in this decade.”

“Nil by Mouth! I could be young and angry and have NZ Nu-Metal to be angry with.”

“You forgot to mention Fast Crew!”

“In the 2000s we had music from the likes of Shapeshifter, Concord Dawn, Katchafire, Fat Freddys, Flight of the Conchords and more.”

“NZ music came of age in the 2000s. Thanks to some better funding, and support from the government we started to hear NZ music on mainstream platforms more.”

“Ultimate Pop Era!”

“In the 2000s Kiwi music achieved a massive level of diversity. The Reggae scene, Hip-hop scene, electronic scene, there was tonnes of stuff out there to convince people who didn’t think NZ music could actually be good.”

“The decade of BBQ dub and North Shore garage rock.” (Meant as a positive)

“Exhibit A: Channel Z.”

“Voting for 2000s because I am pretty sure Weta’s Geographica was released in early 2000s and that is the best NZ album EVER!!”

“More prominent women, more multiculturalism, fewer creepy songs about young girls.”

“There will literally never be such an iconic Kiwi banger as Stop the Music by P Money & Scribe, let’s be real.”

1980s:

“The Dunedin Sound. Unique. So New Zealand.”

“The decade taste forgot some say but our music aesthetic changed forever, Muldoonism finally ran its inevitable course taking his ridiculous sales tax with him – “Don’t give me culture, I’m not hearing you Rob” – anthemic indeed.”

“Flying Nun, Propellor, Pagan et al, Blams, Meemees, LBGP, Dance Exponents begin – the ultimate NZ decade.”

“Verlaines, The Clean, Bats, gives me chills.” (Get it?)

“The Bats, Verlaines, and….The Holiday Makers. Can it get any better?”

“The 90s is strong with Supergroove, Exponents, Bic Runga, late Dobbyn (“Outlook for Thursday!”) and robust Crowded House songs, but I still have to tip my hat at Crocodile’s “Tears”, Split Enz and Dobbyn’s classic hits.”

“This decade had everything from The Skeptics and Coconut Rough to Upper Hutt Posse and Peking Man.”

“Two words: Fred Dagg.”

“Exponents, Mockers, Th Dudes, Split Enz…”

“Almost impossible to pick. The ’80s stuff is so consistent, but the ’90s had a massive breadth. I’m going to give this one to the ’80s because the ’90s has still got a few years to go before it exits the “dated” zone of the recent past. The ’80s saw some truly iconic music that cannot be denied.”

So… what do you think?

Inspirational Valentine’s Day gift ideas from the trusty old television

seinfeld

We’ve assembled some Valentine’s gift inspiration from the only thing you can rely on in this cruel life: the television.

Forgot about Valentine’s Day? Short on time and money to pull off the romantic gesture of your dreams? Never fear, for the path to hell is paved with good intentions and the longest running TV shows always eventually have a Valentine’s Day episode that you can draw inspiration from. Whether you are loved up or seeking hot singles in your area, please enjoy this list of good to terrible suggestions inspired by TV.

Have a George Constanza photoshoot

Take some advice from the Seinfeld dudes and get your mate to help you take some saucy snaps for your significant other and/or Tinder profile. If you have a camera phone, a pair of white underpants, a curtain and a distinct lack of shame, go for your life. Just make sure it’s not synced to the family ipad.

Throw a Galentine’s Party

It’s a day late, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still organise a wild, Parks and Recreation-inspired Galentine’s event with your nearest and dearest. The ingenious vision of feminist hero Leslie Knope, Galentine’s Day falls on February 13th and is a chance to celebrate the love between friendly old mates over waffles and whatever else brings the Galentine’s joy.

Make this iconic card from The Simpsons

Forgot to make a card? Nothing a couple of felt tips and a piece of A4 can’t fix.

Say it with a tattoo

Take a leaf out of Blindspot’s book and record your true feelings for all of eternity on the most romantic organ of all: skin. Get inked with a treasure map leading to a hidden box of discount Cadbury Favourites and you can both enjoy them on the way to the tattoo removal clinic. Swoon.

Make some Valentine’s magic a la Modern Family

Whether you partner likes magic or not, nothing says true love like a well-executed magic trick. No need to go crazy with it, a disappearing hanky will do. Or even that trick where it looks like your thumb is being cut off. A finger over the thumb knuckle, a splash of showmanship, and ta da, you’re on your way to boomtown.

Don’t do what The AM Show tells you

With The AM Show launching yesterday, the reckons came thick and fast about what was and wasn’t appropriate for a Valentine’s gift. “YOU CAN’T BUY A WOMAN SOAP” barked Duncan Garner, whilst Amanda Gillies insisted that a KFC bouquet is a terrible Valentine’s gift. That is simply not true.

Forget Valentine’s altogether

Make like Liz Lemon in 30 Rock and celebrate Anna Howard Shaw day. If you’re a single lady and totally not bitter about it, spend February 14th celebrating the birthday of Anna Howard Shaw, leader of the Women’s Suffrage movement in America and single woman. Then post a selfie, caption it ‘My Valentine’ and go to bed early because really it’s just a Tuesday.

Get personal with a personality test

Short on cash but want to spend some quality time getting to know your lover? Head down to the newly opened Scientology centre, which is not like The Path at all, for a free personality test. There are fun riddles to solve in the IQ test and you’ll get to learn so much about each other, like whether or not you are ‘dangerously withdrawn’ or ‘manic’. They’ll give you free food too if you ask.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Only go if you truly have no money so they can’t somehow take any from you.
