East of Eden (Netflix, October 1)

With production taking place in Tāmaki Makaurau, Ōtepoti and Ōamaru, this star-studded Netflix adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic 1952 novel is a must-watch. Set in the farmlands of the Salinas Valley in early 20th century California, the multigenerational saga centres on Cathy Ames (Florence Pugh), an indelible antihero who shapes the destiny of the Trask family. Also starring heartthrob Mike Faist (Challengers), East of Eden is shaping up to be a huge hit.

Kill Jackie (Neon, October 2)

From the team behind Killing Eve and Gangs of London comes the rip-roaring, globe-trotting Kill Jackie. Based on Nick Harkaway’s novel The Price You Pay, series follows the Welsh Oscar-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones as the titular Jackie, an affluent art dealer with a dangerous past. When she learns of a cabal of cutthroat hitmen that are after her, she turns the tables on these merciless mercenaries. A pulse-pounding thrill ride that is sure to have you on the edge of your seat.

War (Hayu, October 4)

From George Kay, the creator of Lupin and Hijack, comes this high-stakes legal drama that follows Cathcarts and Taylor & Byrne, two prestigious London law firms who are facing off in the divorce of the century. At the centre of the headline-grabbing case is the Jeff Bezos-like British tech mogul Morgan Henderson (Dominic West) and Hollywood film star Carla Duval (Siena Miller), who are hiding their fair share of secrets. Reminiscent of Industry and Suits, the thrilling War is must-see television.

I Want Your Sex (AroVision, September 29)

It’s been a decade since Queer New Wave auteur Gregg Araki last directed a feature film, but now he’s back with I Want Your Sex. In this “silly, sexy, tongue-in-cheek skewering of cross-generational sexual attitudes,” the naive Elliot (Cooper Hoffman) lands a position working for the enigmatic artist Erika Tracy (Olivia Wilde). His fantasies come true as Erika taps him to become her sexual muse but, as professional lines are crossed and boundaries blurred, Elliot finds himself being questioned for murder. Labelled as a “rallying cry for the young, insecure and horny,” I Want Your Sex is an adults-only good time.

Break Clause (Neon, October 4)

Directed by Aotearoa’s own Alice Snedden and starring the BAFTA-nominated Samuel Bottomley and comedian Lara Ricote, the classic rom-com Break Clause follows the two former sweethearts as they navigate their breakup whilst stuck in the same flat. Moving on from your first love is hard enough, but moving out is even harder when you’re locked into a six-month lease. With shades of Jennifer Aniston’s The Break-Up, this hilarious cost-of-living crisis look at love is bound to be a charming watch.

Pick of the Flicks: The Mummy (Prime Video, September 30)

Tom Cruise’s The Mummy may have been a critical and commercial failure, but the beloved 1999 film of the same name is a whole different kettle of fish. Starring Brendan Fraser as the swashbuckling Rick O’Connell and Rachel Weisz as the bumbling scholar Evelyn Carnahan, the two unwisely travel to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, where they unwittingly resurrect Imhotep, a cursed mummy. As “lovably goofy as ever,” big-budget blockbusters don’t get any better than this.
